• Elon Musk says he’s not going to donate to either Trump or Biden.
  • The New York Times reported that Musk met with the former president as Trump hunts for cash.
  • At the moment, Biden’s campaign holds a cash advantage over Trump’s.

Billionaire Elon Musk wrote on Wednesday morning that he would not be donating “to either candidate” for president, a declaration that comes after The New York Times reported that Musk huddled with Trump in Florida.

“Just to be super clear, I am not donating money to either candidate for US President,” Musk wrote on X.

Musk’s refusal isn’t all that surprising. Despite the Telsa CEO’s vast wealth, he’s never been near a megadonor status in American politics. Still, Trump’s meeting with the tech mogul occurred as the former president’s campaign remains on the hunt for campaign donations.

At the moment, President Joe Biden’s campaign continues to hold an advantage over Trump’s. The former president’s reliance on political action committees to fund his legal fees hasn’t helped matters either.

Musk has repeatedly attacked Biden after admitting he voted for the president in 2020. Last year, Musk was also cagey when asked if that meant he would back Trump in the election.

"I would not vote for Biden," Musk told journalist Andrew Ross Sorkin at a New York Times event. "I'm not saying I'd vote for Trump."

Former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley's decision to suspend her campaign on Wednesday means that both major parties have now effectively chosen their nominees, though voting will continue in some states.

Outside of Trump and Biden, 2024 is expected to feature a variety of third-party hopefuls, including noted vaccine skeptic Robert Kennedy Jr. Musk hosted an audio chat on Twitter last summer that featured Kennedy when he was still a Democratic presidential candidate.
